Despite the fact that scientists are trying to make definitive rules for using e-mail to minimize the negative influence, it’s obvious that their recommendations can’t be the same for everyone. However, there are a few tips that are good for everyone:

don’t check your mail early in the morning, or late in the evening;
work first, and check mail later (of course, if it’s not an important part of your work process);
turn off push notifications about incoming mail.

7. Burning incense

Burning incense has a good influence on the central nervous system, it helps us relax and relieve stress. However, in research conducted at the South China University of Technology it was shown that burning incense every day for several hours can be the reason for lung cancer, leukemia, and brain tumors.

Incense can cause mutations. They contain chemicals that can potentially change genetic material like DNA. If you still want to create a relaxing atmosphere, you can use a little incense, but don’t forget to get some fresh air later.

8. Consuming too many energy drinks

Energy drinks can help you wake up and increase your productivity. But drinking them often is not recommended. The results of studies conducted by David Grant from the University of the Pacific show that some energy drinks can increase the risk of an unstable heartbeat.

Volunteers from ages 18 to 40 took part in the research. They either drank 2 bottles of energy drinks or a placebo drink for 3 weeks. Nobody knew which drink they had. As a result, the first group had high blood pressure and an increased heart rate, whereas other didn’t have any deviations.

9. Taking painkillers

Painkillers really help those who have chronic pain. However, in research conducted by the University of Ohio it was shown that painkillers can also decrease the sharpness of good emotions.

In this research, one group of participants took painkillers and the other took a placebo that looked the same. Later, the participants looked at 40 photographs — from very unpleasant (starving children) to very cute (children playing with cats). After every photo, the participants had to estimate how positive certain photos were.

The results showed that the participants who took painkillers estimated that the photos were worse than those who took the placebo. In other words, the emotional perception of reality was distorted.

10. Wrapping your head in a towel

Be careful with wrapping your hair up in a towel. When the hair is wet, a heavy towel can cause split ends or even make your hair fall out, according to Leon Van-Gorkom, a senior manager of hair care at Unilever Research and Development. Instead, use a towel to squeeze out any excess water and let your hair air dry. When squeezing out the excess water, be sure to be gentle and only do it for a short period of time.

11. Taking long showers

Taking long showers feels really nice. They help you to relax and it’s easier to fall asleep after a shower. However, long showers remove moisture from your skin which can lead to dry and itchy skin. Your shower shouldn’t last for more than 10 minutes. The shorter, the better!
