Kiran Rao is not just the wife of Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan. She is a well-known producer, screenwriter and director, who loves to tell extraordinary and unconventional stories through the medium of cinema. All the movies which she has made so far as a director and producer have garnered widespread appreciation from critics as well as the audience. Today, she is more known for her work than being the wife of Aamir Khan.
Born on 7th November 1973 in the state of Telangana, Rao was raised in Kolkata where she completed her schooling before moving to the maximum city Mumbai with her family. She completed her graduation from Sophia College for Women, Mumbai in 1995 and then went to Delhi to study mass communication at the premier AJK Mass Communication Research Center at Jamia Millia Islamia. After completing her course, Kiran returned to Mumbai and started working in the Hindi film industry as an assistant director. She assisted well-known filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar on films like ‘Lagaan’ (2001) and ‘Swades’ (2004).
It was during the shoot of epic sports drama ‘Lagaan’ where Kiran Rao met Aamir Khan for the first time. Apart from acting in it, Aamir was the producer of the film also. Both spent a lot of time together while working on the movie and developed a close relationship. After completing ‘Lagaan’, Rao assisted international filmmaker Mira Nair on ‘Monsoon Wedding’ (2001) and Shaad Ali on ‘Saathiya’ (2002). She assisted Ashutosh again on ‘Swades: We, the People’, which featured Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. In 2005, she tied the knot with Aamir Khan in a very simple ceremony. She made her debut as a director with the Aamir Khan starrer ‘Dhobi Ghat’ (2011). Her husband Aamir produced the film under his banner Aamir Khan Productions.
